I walked by this odd bit of...something (electrical wiring?) the other day and stopped to admire it for a little while. I love the way all the different materials look together (metal, wood, painted cording...leaves!) and the once-usefulness of whatever that little gearbox is, and how now, discarded and rendered objectively useless, it just looks cool. Kinda like these wearable pieces formed from old watch parts that I discovered not too long ago.

I stopped this woman this morning wearing a great all-neutrals outfit that looked really sharp and cool in a very subtle way. The photo doesn't do justice to her cuteness really...and to the awesomeness that was her TEN DOLLAR Simply Vera top (Vera Wang's Kohl's line). It was insanely well-cut and comfy looking to boot. I mean, ten measly dollars (it was on sale, but still)? Note to self: check out Kohl's to fill in fall wardrobe gaps.
She had a great hairstyle too, I noticed - something I've been acutely aware of over the past few months, as I've been busy photographing and interviewing upwards of 40 people for a spread on great hair in the current issue of Washingtonian. You can view the ones that are online here, but check out the paper issue for the printed picks!
Along the way, I met some really cool people (a burlesque dancer, a chocolatier with Dr. McDreamy hair, a producer for Meet the Press) and learned a lot about caring for my hair (I was washing my hair far too often, which was drying it out). Solid proof that it's easy to stumble across really interesting people in our fair city. Speaking of reasons to like DC: a cute piece by my bud Dan Zak, which I read leisurely over the most delicious crepe Sunday at Cafe Napoleon.

This week’s column for Washingtonian is up! There are some major opinions swirling on the footwear they’re wearing. I don’t particularly care for mandals either, but I thought they looked really clean and sorta artsy on this guy.
Last week’s column is here, if you didn’t see that one.

That’s Marlene Hu Aldaba on the right looking as sleekly sophisticated as you might expect from someone who sells these for a living. And that’s no Devi-Kroell-for-Target bag she’s carrying either.
She’s walking with the designer Peter Soronen, who was in town for a private showing of his latest demi-couture collection – the idea being that you work with the designer to select the fabrics and shapes and have it all made-to-measure. Which sounds well, pretty much incredibly fabulous, don’t you think?! Soronen has dressed Christina Ricci, Jennifer Hudson, Sarah Jessica and Michelle Obama (love the idea of a First Lady with style and substance…).
Of course, due to my poor email organizational skills I didn’t attend the event the other week and maybe it’s best – I would have wanted to sell off my entire wardrobe just to be able to work with Soronen for something like the fourth look in his Fall/Winter collection…or the eleventh or twelfth or…

I have a habit of under-accessorizing, so I’m inspired by this woman’s colorful scarf and pretty beaded jewelry – all with a colorful but casual outfit. She bought the bracelet at the Life by Energy Holistic Center, which is upstairs from Redeem on 14th Street (don’t worry, I didn’t know about it either). I’m not sure if the necklace is available there or not, but I’ve seen similar styles at Urban Outfitters…
