Definitely one of my favorite photos of late. Don’t they all look like they’re in a band & she’s the lead singer?
I like that their looks and expressions reveal a hint of each person’s personality.
I think her hair is the best accessory of all.

This photo really shows the variety of styles that you might see at an Ethiopian wedding celebration. The older women on the left are wearing the more traditional dresses, while the other two women wear more modern, Westernized outfits. All of their outfits were custom-made by local Ethiopian dressmakers; the woman in the short dress had hers made at a clothier on 14th Street.
I love the pink color of the dress on the right…it reminds me of the cherry blossom petals, which have begun to shed and layer the sidewalks in a kind of Spring snow:

NY-based rapper Thelonious Kapps was at Howard with a youth education tour group called APEX. He had this great 80s-hip-hop look going on, a lot like the Retro Kids.

Casey Crawford.
Crawford is a junior graphic design major who participated as a model in BET’s Rip the Runway in New York. He’s also creating a clothing line with a friend called HaveKnot$. “There’s a standard for dressing here that doesn’t exist at other schools,” he said. Both Crawford and another student, sophomore Mark Lacy, said that men try just as hard, if not harder, to look good on campus. “From the hair down to the shoes, men worry about everything.”

Shaun “Dolce” Asia and Marcus “Gabbana” Jones. “‘Skateboard-slim’ jeans and Levi’s 501 and 504s” are popular with men at Howard, said Asia. “People push the envelope in terms of style,” added Jones.

This is the first of an occasional series I’ll do on college students in the area. Men of Howard will post tomorrow.
Howard University has been called a “fashion show,” and when I went the other day for a look, I found it to be completely true. It was a Friday and a gorgeous, sunny day on campus, and everyone–the men and women both–were out showing off their spring wardrobes. Personal style, as opposed to “fashion,” is important at Howard. “We don’t try to follow trends,” said Bintu Kabba (above, in yellow). “I don’t want to look like the next person, and I like to play around with it…I can look 50s one day and 70s another day.” Women tend to favor heels, True Religion jeans, and bold, statement outfits. There’s definitely a sense of fun and playfulness…and competition in terms of dress. If you wanna wear sweats to class, don’t go to Howard.

I live right up the street from the Shaw Recreation Park and have always wanted to stop and watch the guys who skateboard there.
The guys at the park share a pretty distinct style, though none of them wanted to really admit it. Looking cool is one thing, admitting that you think about looking cool is another. Standbys like T-shirts layered over long-sleeved shirts are still popular, and every skater wore some type of vulcanized-sole shoe from brands like Fallen and Dekline.

As I walked up, I felt a little intimidated to be the only girl around, but the guys instantly warmed to the idea of me taking pictures of them, especially in action on their boards.

Off their boards, a few of the guys were shy, except this guy.
One thing they weren’t shy about? Expressing their disdain over Mayor Fenty’s apparent crackdown on skaters, especially on Freedom Plaza.
