Spring Fling

Exposed

{Washington photographer Gerda De Gorte’s ‘W’ is on view at Longview Gallery through today as part of the annual Exposed exhibition}

I know spring is around the corner not because of the weather or the daffodils blooming (yet!), but because of the bounty of spring events hitting my inbox.

The annual Exposed exhibition of local photographers takes a look at our hometown for a view that goes beyond the typical snaps of the Washington-monument-with-fireworks to reveal stories surprising and mysterious even to fellow residents. Go! It closes today at Longview Gallery. Post scribe Michael O’Sullivan reviewed the show here.

Thread, a pop-up featuring emerging and established designers/artisans locally and beyond, returns to Union Market April 4-6. Vendors will include Sid and Ann Mashburn, the nationally acclaimed men and women’s lifestyle brand out of Atlanta; Emerson Fry, a classic womenswear line out of Portsmouth, New Hampshire; DURKL, Los Angeles based, sophisticated street-wear; a custom showroom/gallery created by the renowned interior designer Darryl Carter for the local artist Brooke Bronner, Maggy Frances, a retro-inspired line out of NYC by the young designer Maggy Frances Schultz; Third + Grace, a custom chair upholstery shop out of Baltimore; letterpress company Typecase Industries; Politics And Prose, the iconic independent book store carrying a handpicked selection of books inspired by Thread; and Harry’s, an online destination built by Warby Parker founder, Jeffery Raider, offering men a well-priced and high class shave.

On Saturday, April 5, the monthly Meet Market pops back up in Logan Circle. Held on the first Saturday of every month April through November, the goal is to support the city’s small business and creative community. This year, organizers are partnering up with local companies including Honest Tea, Relay Foods, Zipcar, The Human Rights Campaign, Think Local First DC, No Kings Collective, POP Wed Co., Topaz + Arrow, Rock-n-Romp! and Capitol Romance. Opening Day will include live painting & free raffle by No Kings Collective and Kelly Towles, live musical performances by America Hearts, Light Arms, and DJ vANNIEty Kills, hosted by Rock-n-Romp!, an interactive photo booth for all ages, and over 40 local vendors selling their goods such as Baked & Wired, Twisted Aristocrat, Pure Palette Scents, Grey Moggie Press, Mallory Shelter Jewelry, and many more! The market is free, open to the public, and always family and pet-friendly.

The District Flea is back for another season! Same place (945 Florida Ave, NW) and things kick off April 5. Click the link to scope new vendors and start scraping up those pennies.

Attention shoe lovers: DSW is opening a (huge) location in Georgetown, in the Georgetown Mall on M Street, on April 10 at 10 a.m. No opening events or prizes seem to be in the works (cheap shoes sell themselves, no?) but if that changes, I’ll shout it out on Twitter. Also, are you following me in Instagram?
