Random Summer 2012 185

About three months ago, I found myself sweating profusely as I dodged traffic trying to traverse Dupont Circle. Sick of the heat, sick of the same color-blocked outfits with shiny nude pumps that marked spring and summer, it was time. For fall. Specifically, BLACK LEATHER. I soon scored leather skirt #1 (high-waisted, tassles!) on eBay; the second (buttery, A-line, TEN DOLLARS) I bought this weekend. The cashmere hear sweater is from Saks and will be added to my stockpile of stripes.

My fall strategy: eyeliner, black, leather, and an emphasis on Parisian je ne sais quoi a la Julia Restoin-Roitfeld.

Style It-List.

It’s that time of the year when fall events are about to hit, to add these events to your calendar now and don’t miss them! I’m on the host committee for both this year.

Fashion’s Night Out Georgetown takes place across the country on September 6 (turns out Old Town is getting into the game, too). Businesses throughout Georgetown will be offering discounts, freebies, music and probably more Champagne and cupcakes than you could ever imagine. But it’s not going to be all about conspicuous consumption: my friends over at BYT will be hosting a clothing drive for Goodwill. You get to clear out your closet and feel less guilty about stocking it with new fall things. Win-win.

Stop what you’re doing, right now, and go to the District Sample Sale’s site and buy a ticket. You’ll score gorgeous clothes for up to 90% off (!!!) what they were in all of your favorite local boutiques. I always get at least one thing, and that one thing always becomes a wardrobe staple. Your charitable contribution in the form of a $40, $100, or $250 ticket gets you access to these deals, plus more wine, food, cupcakes (there we go again!), free on-site blowouts, etc than you can imagine.

I’m incredibly honored to be on the committee this year – nearly everything for the event is donated (the space, all of that food, etc etc) so the charity each season walks away with 100% of the proceeds (more than $260K donated since ’06). This year’s charity is Sitar Arts Center, which provides arts education and after-school programming to local, underserved kids.

So: buy a ticket. Spring for the VIP or Benefactress. You will have donated to charity, and you’ll get in a full hour before the masses. Trust me, it’s worth it.

Last but not least, a quick PSA: for those of you who love a good vintage find, Washington vintage institution Meeps is back! And it’s now owned by Cathy and Katerina of Treasury! (and way back in the day, Listopad–read an interview I did with them in ’07 ohmygawd). The store officially opens tomorrow at noon, and a buy/sell/trade program starts Monday.
