Brilliant: Mikeal Jansson’s photographs of aging rock stars in skinny suits in the current issue of T, the New York Times‘ style magazine. Iggy Pop (and his oddly lovely crepe-papery chest skin), in Prada, opens the feature, called “Ballad of a Thin Man.”

The Tossed & Found giveaway has been a hit, so here’s another opportunity to win, for those of you in Baltimore (of if you’re looking for an excuse to explore our neighbor city): two free tickets to the Boutique Warehouse Sale, also the evening of March 25. It’s sounding a bit like the early days of the District Sample Sale (details here if you haven’t yet purchased tickets), but with an entire preview evening to score the best stuff. Which you will do, along with a friend, when you leave a comment here letting us know your favorite thing to do/see/eat in Baltimore.

A winner will be selected at noon on Friday. Good luck!

Spring 2011 005

“Having a new haircut that you really like feels a little like being infatuated with a new boy except it’s even better ’cause you’re infatuated with yourself.”
-my friend Ann, who if she ever starts a blog (and she should), will probably get linked to here a lot.

* yes, i’m in the bathroom at work. we have a very lovely old-fashioned full-length mirror in there.
** this hair is SO ready to ditch the black and don some bright spring looks, no? like this early spring idea (i’m obsessed with longer hemlines at the moment) and this amazing color-combo…

Last week I went to a luncheon put on by Vanity Fair and Jones New York and hosted by Dee Dee Myers in celebration of the Jones New York Empowerment Fund and its 2011 recipients. The Fund is part of the company’s “Empowering Your Confidence” campaign – you’ve likely seen the regional “Power Women of DC” ads on bus shelters and in local magazines like Capitol File and DC magazine – featuring Myers, journalist Sheila Brooks, and Georgetown Cupcake entrepreneurs Sophie LaMontage and Katherine Kallinis.

The six women at the luncheon were each given $5,000 to start up a businesses, continue their education, or pay for equipment to bring existing companies to the next level. The room was filled with smart, engaging women from all areas of power in Washington – politics, business, the arts, and publishing. I sat with Washingtonian‘s Jill Hudson Neal and representatives from Ladies Who Launch, among others, including a woman who I was introduced to just before she had to excuse herself before dessert – Georgetown Cupcakes, of course – to dash off to greet a high-ranking Chilean official.

I left the lunch full of inspiration and a renewed faith in the power of entrepreneurial ideas, trusting instincts, and asking for help. What smart woman I know doesn’t have at least one business plan in her head?! It’s time for us to get them out, on paper, and happening. I’ll be looking to the online Jones New York Little Black Book of Career Advice to keep me going.

Yes, I have new hair! My new angled bob is ready for spring…

Win it: Pair of Tickets to Junior League’s Tossed & Found

Tossed&Found

The Junior League’s Tossed & Found sale is coming up, and it’s something of a well-kept secret for scoring awesome previously-loved clothes, accessories, furniture (my friend Sarah of The District Domestic/Haute Papier got a gorgeous desk for her home office) and more, including tons of designer stuff. One lucky winner wins a pair of tickets to the Preview Night Friday March 25, which means FREE first dibs on all the best stuff.

To win, leave a comment with your ideas for transitioning into spring, or what you’re planning to buy or wear as the weather warms. I’m considering venturing into shorts territory – there are so many pretty, feminine options and I’m determined to find a pair or two that work – and/or skirts or pants in a pop of color like red or orange like these from Asos.

I’ll choose a winner on Wednesday. Good luck!
