Megan,
Completely agree! That's why I specify that a tank/thin-strap top is fine for the commute (it's hot here, no fashion martyrs necessary), but that covering up with a cardigan or jacket is essential upon approaching the office.

Anyone have other intern/general office-dressing guidelines, tips, or links to appropriate gear?

Dear former intern,
You were always appropriately dressed when you worked for us at the Smithsonian! We all did a good job wearing the right clothes, even on a limited budget. PS Thanks for the coffee cake.

I'd disagree with the strapless bra suggestion, however; if you are wearing a top (halter, strapless, racerback, etc) that could show your standard bra strap at work, you should probably cover up your bare shoulders with a fitted jacket or cardi anyway.
