Dear Intern

Tuesday, July 20, 2010

I kick off “Intern Fashion Week” on the Washington Post’s Campus Overload blog with some rules of thumb for our city’s interns. I’m pretty proud of the “cardigans, not Kardashians” bit. Look out for advice from other bloggers throughout the week.

Our intern at work sounds like Gina from Empire Records, so naturally I told her she needs to sing Sugar High at some point this summer. Such a great song (the real version, kids…), to turn up and flail around to while in your car or in your room getting dressed.

    Dear former intern,
You were always appropriately dressed when you worked for us at the Smithsonian! We all did a good job wearing the right clothes, even on a limited budget. PS Thanks for the coffee cake.

I’d disagree with the strapless bra suggestion, however; if you are wearing a top (halter, strapless, racerback, etc) that could show your standard bra strap at work, you should probably cover up your bare shoulders with a fitted jacket or cardi anyway.

    Megan,
Completely agree! That’s why I specify that a tank/thin-strap top is fine for the commute (it’s hot here, no fashion martyrs necessary), but that covering up with a cardigan or jacket is essential upon approaching the office.

Anyone have other intern/general office-dressing guidelines, tips, or links to appropriate gear?
