Avant Marilyn.

I’ve been inspired recently by a pile of Avant Garde magazines I picked up at the Georgetown Flea market a few weeks ago. The magazine had a brief run between 1968 and 1972 and during that time published 16 issues, each packed with essays and art, including a series of erotic lithographs made by John Lennon. Issue #2 featured an exclusive contribution by Bert Stern – the last photographer to photograph Marilyn Monroe before her death – of images from that shoot printed in Day-Glo serigraphs. Each page appears hand-done and individually painted, and must have been insanely costly to produce. Scanned just for you, Bert Stern’s phantasmagoric view of Marilyn.
