Today is your lucky day! You can be among the first in the city to see R.J. Cutler’s much buzzed-about fashion documentary, The September Issue.

There’s an advance screening of the movie tomorrow, September 3, at 7:30 p.m. at the AMC Georgetown, and I’ve got 20 tickets to give away (each admits two). That’s right: you, a friend, and a truly lovely and thoughtful 90-minute look at the world of American Vogue.

To enter, leave a comment about what you love about fall, fashion or otherwise. What rituals do you enact when you wake up to that first fall morning? What’s topping your fall wish-list, and how and where would you wear it? I’ll contact 20 lucky winners via email at around 10:00 this evening. Happy entering!

I like to think of September as the “Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” It started in middle school, when I couldnt wait to wear my back to school clothes…this anticipation carried on through college and even now as a part of the workforce. This fall..I cant wait to wear my new leather motorcycle jacket. I may just throw it on this week!

    My fall wishlist:
    -Chunky chokers
    -Leather mini skirt
    -Ripped skinny jeans
    -Faux fur vest
-Anything with fringe (I’m still hooked!)

Fave local boutiques to get them:
    -Lettie Gooch
    -Rue 14
    -Urban Chic

I’m seeing myself having a big grey moment this fall. Grey flannels, brown suede shoes, Michael Basitan/KZO-ish…with a little Ralph Lauren for good measure. I don’t know how “moment” it is…but it’s what’s stuck in my head and has me wishing for cooler days!

Waking up, getting a hot cup of coffee, wrapping an extra long scarf around my neck, throwing on a white vneck and skinny jeans and heading outside. Fall is all about scarfs, scarfs, scarfs… lots of them.

I love fall because I get to wear pretty jackets, tights and hats. I never thought I’d be a wintertime girl, but I find that I’m enjoying the cold!

    My fall wishlist:
-More berets. I currently have 3 in different colors but I’m obsessed. Makes any outfit instantly chic.
    -Knee-high socks in every color
    -Knit dresses
    -Sheer tights

I would wear a combination of these items anywhere and everywhere.

fall is absolutely my favorite time of year. fashion-wise, for me, it’s all about mixing in blazers, scarves, and boots for work and play. i like bright colors on nails and lips in the fall too. i know it’s not quite fall yet, but with the fall-like weather we’ve been enjoying, i indulged in my favorite fall ritual last night–turning off the AC and sleeping with the windows open!

The fall is great. Especially in DC. This is when we break out the beautiful layers, all centered around a great coat. For my wish list, I’m kind of wanting a dark denim jacket. Paired with a narrow shoe, slim cut gray slacks, white button down, I think that would look pretty slick on a weekend in DC. Club Monaco in Georgetown would be my go-to. I’m a guy, but I still want to be fashionable. And I’m kind of obsessed with this movie. The trailer still gives me chills! :) Love the blog!

I’m looking forward to the crisp fall air so I can break out the quilted Barbour, cable knit sweaters and cords, with much beloved Wallabee’s and Bean boots.

  9. Abra September 2, 2009 9:20 am

Fall rituals? Breaking out the makeup. In summer it’s all about sheers, nudes and pink so I keep it pretty minimal. But once the weather turns cold, look out.

It’s eye shadows in green, burgundy and purple. It’s lips in red and berry. Deep blushes, dark nail polishes and my new favorite Bobbi Browns gold and violet eye liners.

I love Fall because it’s an excuse to play with makeup again.

I can answer all of your questions in one word: BOOTS!

To elaborate a bit, though: I love boots and wear them nearly every day once autumn rolls around. I am on an endless quest for the perfect boot (neutrals or color…loving eggplant right now), and am dying to find the perfect (and affordable) shootie!

  11. Christen September 2, 2009 9:29 am

I love fall for five reasons:
Boots, tights, jackets, scarves and knits!
All five are wonderful solutions for this odd transitional period where the weather can’t seem to make up its mind.

For this fall in particular, I am looking for over-the-knee boots, embellished tights and leggings and sharp-shouldered jackets. But my favorite piece for this fall? The new Rachel Roy faux fur vest that just came in the mail! I cannot wait to wear it… hopefully to this screening! What a wonderful giveaway :)

Fall, My favorite time of the year – let me count the ways I love thee:

    1. Boots, boots and boots! A girl can NEVER have too many! (I even committed a fashion crime and wore a pair last month – I was so anxious!)
    2. Scarfs and more scarfs! I’ve started collecting some from other countries and now have an addiction! If I travel somewhere I try to purchase a scarf!
    3. Sweater dresses. I don’t have many but this fall, they are a priority! Cute, classic and simple. Sweater dresses can be worn for almost ANY occasion and are simply lovely.
    4. The color mustard. Hands down – hotness and SCREAMS fall to me.
    5. Leggings!
    6. Jackets! I finally went out and purchased a motorcycle jacked that I already rocked last week! I have a beautiful yellow/mustard one I plan to break out very soon. Can’t have enough jackets!
    7. Perfect shopping weather! This is where you can spend hours on end going from cute boutique, to outdoor shopping center to flea market. Something is in the air this time of year that just draws you in!

    Fall Brings:
    F – Fabulousity!
    A – Accessories galore!
L – Lovely weather for HOT clothes!
    L – Limitless options!

One of my fav movies is “The Devil Wears Prada,” so this seems like a good next step for addiction. :) And honestly, I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my evening!

While I’ve always dreamed of Tom Hanks giving me a bouquet of sharpened pencils, I’d have to say it’s the quiet that returns with fall. Nights are more restful without the hum of the A.C., and after the frenzied pace of summer, it feels easier to breathe in autumn.

Plus, there is nothing like T-shirt and jeans weather.

  14. Laura September 2, 2009 9:49 am

I’m a huge layerer, and fall is the perfect time for it! I can’t wait to break out my sweaters, blazers, scarves, and everything else possible for layering. I also am looking forward to wearing tights with skirts and tall boots – a fall fave.

  15. Kewanna Hayward September 2, 2009 9:56 am

What I love about fall fashion:
-Finally wearing my knee boots I searched hi and low for all summer lol
-Adding another color wool coat to my collection
-Seeing all the various scarfs and new ways to integrate them into your outfit
-colorful tights &sweater dresses for those nights I’m hanging down Ust

Fall to me is about meshing my choice of clothing with my flavor of hot tea i can go from earl gray (somber) to chai (spicy)!

Hi Rachel. Hope all is well. I love fashion because it is individual and empowering. Even with trends, a person is able to use their mood, attitude and preferences to craft a style, an alter ego or a persona that makes them feel however they wish to feel. Fall is an amazing time. I love it for its blazers, tights, corduroy, boots, scarves galore and layers, layers…Fall also ushers the combination of a trinity of colors I love: orange, brown and navy. The air is crisp. While people are still glowing from the warm summer sun, their spirit is quieter and more introverted…leading to a cocoon of comfort and ease. :-)

  17. janelle September 2, 2009 10:25 am

I love warm weather, but fall fashion gets me really excited. I especially love boots. Their such a staple in my fall wardrobe my boss calls me ‘Bootsie’. This fall I’m also in search of a great leather jacket, lots of cardigans for layering and anything in one of fall’s hot new colors – warm olive.

  18. Lavanya September 2, 2009 10:41 am

    Hi, Rachel!
Yesterday morning I woke up and put on a top from Redeem, and my Indian mother, who is visiting me, fell in love with it. She *may* be beginning to understand why I choose not to wear the Gap, why I buy weird, architectural things from designers with whom I can e-mail directly, and why i am lately wearing a knuckle ring from Oak (gift from Matty) that I think is better than any diamond ring from Tiffany. And that’s why I want to take her with me to the movie :)
This fall, I’ll wear what I bought last year (and still love), because it will remind me when things were a little better, and people had jobs, and our industry wasn’t throwing away its best people like discarded tissues.
    Love your question today!

Being an American with a Japanese mom in the U.S., my mom and I do what the Japanese do culturally to enjoy the beautiful colors of autumn. We make traditional Japanese “bento” lunches and go to a park. We sit under colorful trees and enjoy our quality time together. Because my mom is getting older, I know I don’t have many years to enjoy this so these times that we only enjoy once a year are becoming more and more cherished outings. I hope you will select my comment as a winner for the September Issue screening.

  20. Erin September 2, 2009 12:24 pm

We are getting a taste of Fall early this year, and I have been wearing my new green motorcycle/bomber style jacket with pride on the way to work this week. I want to wear it tomorrow night to this screening! Loves it!

Ahh fall… a redhead’s dream season. Long held prisoner by the pastels of summer and spring that wash out our lovely pale skin and make our cute freckles look like boils, we are finally free to wear the glorious jewel and deep earth tones that God intended us to wear! At last, a time to break out the olive green leather pants that we spent too much money on last year, even though we knew the window to wear them was tighter than said pants after a few apple cider martinis. Finally, an excuse to incorporate our favorite mustard colored sweater into at least three of your work ensembles this week. We know we will ultimately justify shelling out the big bucks for those fabulous suede boots in boutique window by your office because, although this glorious season for us redheaded folk is short, we know it will come again. Ahh, thank the Lord, it is fall in D.C. at last!

  22. Kate September 2, 2009 1:44 pm

One: Fall foods (apple cider, butternut squash, and toasted pumpkin seeds) and fall crafts (cornhusk dolls, leaves pressed in wax paper) are great.
Two: Wearing lots of cardigans in cool weather doesn’t draw quite as much mockery from my friends from California as it does the other 3/4 of the year.
Three: The most wonderful thing of all about fall in DC is, of course, that the ac in office buildings no longer needs to be on-full blast to accommodate the men wearing wool suits in 90 degree weather. Not having to bundle up at your desk does wonders for a girl’s style.

  23. RC September 2, 2009 2:15 pm

I love fall in DC, especially, because it lasts more than 1 week! We get plenty of time to enjoy the crisp air, colorful leaves, and locally-grown apples at the farmers market before winter sets in. Added bonus: getting to say so long to the humidity! For the past few years one of my favorite fall rituals has been to pull my frizz-prone hair out of the bun that it’s been coiled in all summer and let it hang down with the knowledge that it will, in fact, hang down and not poof out.

  24. NGB September 2, 2009 2:40 pm

What can be better than sleeping with the windows open, finally using up the nutmeg that sits in the cupboard all year round, and toasting pumpkin seeds?

  25. Nedra September 2, 2009 3:00 pm

I’m looking forward to fall because it’s when I’m going to have my first child. In addition to the joy of becoming a mom, I can’t wait to be able to get back into anything fashionable again. I don’t think I spent enough time before appreciating how great it feels to put on a wrap dress and a pair of tights, a fitted jacket with my favorite jeans or even all those boots that wouldn’t go over my swollen feet right now. I love being a woman — because I can have so much fun with fashion, when I’m not creating life.

  26. Emily September 2, 2009 3:54 pm

Fall equals tall, beautiful, richly-colored chocolate LEATHER BOOTS. To have and to hold and to wear anywhere.

  27. Nat Greenbaum September 2, 2009 4:02 pm

Can’t wait to dish on Winotour.

  28. Cheyenne Hopkins September 2, 2009 4:04 pm

Fall is my favorite season. It’s the best season for fashion. I love begining fall by finding what of my summer or spring outfits can be combined with fall tights, belts and sweaters for a good contrast. I’m looking forward to incorporating more belts in my wardrobe for fall along with colored tights. Some of the 80s trends that Marc Jacobs showed in his fall runway could also be exciting. DC can be conservative in fashion so it’s fun so fall is a great time to layer some fun trends like bright pants or a rocker top with a suit. Layering overall makes fall a great time to experiment and incorporate contrasting clothes together for a punch.

  29. Jasti September 2, 2009 4:48 pm

My favorite thing about fall is stepping out of my house, on a bed of multi-colored, freshly-fallen leaves in my slouchy off-the-shoulder sweater, dark skinny jeans and black Frye Engineer boots. Fall makes me feel relaxed, but fabulous. It’s more forgiving than summer, and gives me a reason to love and embrace fashion even more.

  30. Chic Chocolate September 2, 2009 7:37 pm

crisp, cool weather calls for my light cozy camel-shaded cashmere sweater layered with a dark skinny jean…chocolate suede low heel “over the knee” boots…a chloe paraty shopper…steaming hot pumpkin lattes…nars tokaido nail lacquer…my olympus digital camera…hot, homemade apple pie…and a stroll through the city with my sweetie taking in all the beautiful fall foliage…pure heaven!

  31. Sylvia September 2, 2009 7:46 pm

Fall is the best time of the year – and always reminds me of leaves, cider, and lots and lots of boots, blazers, and belts. I love leaving my windows open when it starts to get cool and getting all cozy under the covers (preferably with starbucks apple cider and/or pumpkin spice latte). I might even do it tonight!

This fall – I’m definitely lusting for a great leather jacket and a pair of oxfords. I know – the two are totally opposite – but I think they could work together with a great tweed shift and solid tights. I just started working and I’m hoping these will add some spice to my day!

(I’m also hoping for some over-the-knee boots, but I think that might scare some of the nerdskis in my office)

  32. Colleen September 2, 2009 9:20 pm

Fall is great clothes weather for women – when the temperature outside matches inside buildings! That sounds banal – but you end up with more freedom to wear great clothes. Skirts still are great, lightweight tops still work, and you can rock it :)

  33. Steph September 3, 2009 2:07 pm

Love fall for the colors – the rich colors of Burnt Oranges, Purples, Blues, Cranberry and Greens. I love the fact that it’s an in between month, so you can layer some of your summer stuff with swanky chic fall items. Sweaters, tanks, dresses and blouses, you choose, be creative. And with the Economy being the way it is, money is not at a great dispense as it use to be….
Using your creative will and create your own style to bring into fashion. Love a chunky sweater with boots. Keep you warm and your ready to play!
My must have, lots’ of scarves and accessories!!! My must have….A new pair of OTK Boots, whether vintage or thrift…this is my fall must have…and leather shorts!!!!!!

  34. Windsor September 28, 2009 11:55 am

I know I’m late but I would like to get heads up on future screenings near Boston, MA through email.

    Thank You
