Was anyone else handed a copy of H&M’s Autumn 2009 magazine as they exited the Metro this morning? (me: Street Sense? Did it yesterday. Examiner? Ehhh. Fall fashion glossiness galore? Yes, please!)
Check it out – do those earrings look familiar…?!

Fall fashion! As much as I’m not enjoying this hot, humid weather, you have to admit that it makes ushering in the fall season, with its just-bought-packages of tights, so much better. There are tons of looks competing for your attention and closet space in the upcoming season (eighties! forties! Mad-Men sixties!), and if it starts to feel a little disorienting, consider this: the crisp white shirt. It’s back, too – but did it ever leave? No, it’s never stopped looking utterly polished and flattering, all business and elegant femininity at once. Just ask Carolina Herrera, who has made it her signature. Banana Republic’s Fall 2009 ad campaign (above) is all about the white shirt.
Vogue, August 2009
Two of my favorite images of late came from two completely different sources and timeperiods, and imply two very different lifestyles. But they both feature the white shirt. It’s the ultimate equalizer. While the images of these two women couldn’t look any more disparate, they, and their white shirts, are equally sexy and unfussy.
National Geographic, January 1991
I recently stocked up on crisp whites ($4 ea) at Martha’s Outfitters (yes, it is a thrift store open to the public!).

These earrings were another find ($2!) at the Big Flea the other weekend. They are somehow Ivanka Trump, flamenco dancer, and Josephine Baker all rolled into one.
