In honor of the first day of school, that first fall chill in the air, and the forties feel of the season, I give you Berwick High School, Class of 1940.

They had it in spades, didn’t they?

My friend Lex wrote to say that while on the Obama campaign, he heard that John F. Kennedy used to change his suit three times a day so he looked fresh wherever he went. Elegance + idealism = a powerful combination.

The September Issue Screening Party

On Wednesday night, a gaggle of high-heeled ladies and a few dapper gentlemen were the some of the first in the city to see The September Issue. The screening was held at E Street Cinema, and then everyone made their way over to the W Hotel for drinks, music from DJ Neekola, freebies from Bliss, and photo sessions that turned you into a Vogue cover girl.

Making a Cameo at the Elle Party

Angie Goff and the evening’s hero, Chris Reiter

Tonight I went to a rather mysterious party at the home of Jaci and Morris Reid, a veryfabulous DC power couple who live just off New Mexico Avenue. Mysterious because the party was “celebrating” Roberta (Robbie) Myers, Editor in Chief of ELLE, and Heather Vandenberghe, the SVP of Marketing at Louis Vuitton. The invite didn’t say why they were here in DC or being honored, but as it turns out, the magazine and luxury brand will hold a fashion show with Reid in October. Jaci, as it turned out, suffered a stroke in June, and seems to be recovering well.

The excitement of the evening came in the form of a female guest who lost her balance next to a teetery cocktail table and went down with it and my red velvet Georgetown Cupcake (dinner: two cupcakes and a piece of salmon sushi). Muleh’s Chris Reiter (above, with WUA9’s Angie Goff), gallant and nattily dressed to boot, dashed over to right her.

Robbie Myers was thin and beautiful, with her hair up in her signature ‘do. Upon meeting me, she inquired as to the origin of each thing I was wearing (uhhh…thrift, flea, Filene’s!) before confessing that her (white, sleeveless) dress was “three seasons old.” The horror!

Robin Givhan, who’s now living near Union Station, was there too (I love her – I’m such a dorky fan). We talked about the CNN show we taped together in January – apparently she never saw it either. She later left to walk her dog.

Sorry I don’t have much to offer in terms of photos. (I have really gotten terrible at taking photos at these things. A clutch, a drink, a camera – too much!) I promise to make that up tonight, at a screening of The September Issue, hosted by Gilt Groupe founders Alexis and Alexandra. Can’t wait to see this movie!! It officially opens in DC September 11, I think – I’ll keep you posted…

Was anyone else handed a copy of H&M’s Autumn 2009 magazine as they exited the Metro this morning? (me: Street Sense? Did it yesterday. Examiner? Ehhh. Fall fashion glossiness galore? Yes, please!)

Check it out – do those earrings look familiar…?!

Falling for the White Shirt.

Fall fashion! As much as I’m not enjoying this hot, humid weather, you have to admit that it makes ushering in the fall season, with its just-bought-packages of tights, so much better. There are tons of looks competing for your attention and closet space in the upcoming season (eighties! forties! Mad-Men sixties!), and if it starts to feel a little disorienting, consider this: the crisp white shirt. It’s back, too – but did it ever leave? No, it’s never stopped looking utterly polished and flattering, all business and elegant femininity at once. Just ask Carolina Herrera, who has made it her signature. Banana Republic’s Fall 2009 ad campaign (above) is all about the white shirt.

Vogue, August 2009

Two of my favorite images of late came from two completely different sources and timeperiods, and imply two very different lifestyles. But they both feature the white shirt. It’s the ultimate equalizer. While the images of these two women couldn’t look any more disparate, they, and their white shirts, are equally sexy and unfussy.

I recently stocked up on crisp whites ($4 ea) at Martha’s Outfitters (yes, it is a thrift store open to the public!).
