Wow, the guys totally brought it yesterday, ladies. What a fun conversation. Let’s have one of our own, shall we? I’d like to hear whatever’s on your mind today, be it any of the topics below or something else. Rant, rave.

You’ll be the winner of today’s prize, a perfectly pretty spring nightgown from locally-based, nationally-known lingerie line Belabumbum (so fun to say). I love this women-powered company for its affordable, feminine pieces and for their development work in Brazil – they work with socially conscious manufacturers there l to ensure optimal working conditions and job security to over one hundred low-income Brazilian families.

And if I ever become pregnant (shudder), I will want a drawer full of their pretty-yet-functional lingerie and maternitywear.

So again – say whatever you want. But if you get stuck….topics:
Did you like Michelle Obama’s looks for her European visit? Did you feel that they were appropriate, or not? What item of clothing or style would you like to see her wear?

Thoughts on the DC dating scene?

What are your thoughts on Robin Givhan? I had no idea that she was such a divisive character, but people either love her or well, seem to blame her for all of DC’s “style problems.”

What’s making DC cooler? Is it the Obamas? Something else? What defines Washington’s cultural scene?

Contest will end tonight, around 11:00 p.m. Happy entering!

Discuss: what’s best to sleep in?

I can’t stand pants. Long night gowns have a similar bunching problem. And what’s the point of just a shirt?

Ergo, short nighties like this are ideal (unless you go for the buff). You look sexy, feel comfortable, and can sleep soundly. Plus, my favorite color is green! Please please can I add this to my collection?

Honestly, I feel sorry for Givhan. She used to sit sideline on the runways in Paris and now she’s reduced to leading a chat on whether Susan Boyle should get a makeover? Time to say bye-bye to the Washington Post, in my opinion!

I sleep in ratty, paint-stained t-shirts, Kate, so I am totally with you. Once in awhile I change it up by wearing Great-Aunt Dot’s old brown slip, or a cotton short nightie I bought in ca. 1995 (Rach, that blue one we both had. I’m sure you’ve gotten rid of yours by now!). I know that being your sister is probably an automatic DQ, but that nightie is so freaking adorable I thought I’d give it a whirl anyway.

If anyone hasn’t seen this yet, here’s the recent Givhan controversy EmilyHaHa is referring to:

    and the chat: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2009/04/20/DI2009042001690.html

    brenna,
maybe DQ this round, but someone’s birthday is coming up….!

Re: Givhan. I guess I just don’t even understand what would possess someone to write that. It’s just insulting. And really not becoming of a fashion writer…

Re: Givhan. I guess I just don’t even understand what would possess someone to write that. It’s just insulting. And really unbecoming of a fashion writer.

OTOH, it could speak more to what’s going on with the Post’s staff, which I’m hearing is a disaster.

I think the Obamas are definitely helping make DC cooler but I think that they’re just part of a larger cultural shift away from the business sector towards politics and cultural awareness. At the same time, I think that DC as a whole has evolved as the changing of the guard has shifted over the past five years.

  9. Jenna April 23, 2009 3:30 pm

I think the Obamas are making DC cooler, but not as much as the media is making it out to be. The New York Times style section seems to think that, with the advent of Obama, Washington became a bunch of cocktail-sipping, club-going, Jimmy Choo-wearing fashionistas. Clearly, the New York Times staffers don’t ride the metro to work every morning. Because if they did, they’d see that fashionable dressing has yet to trickle down to much of the DC populous.

Honestly, I’m not a fan of Michelle’s style to me she tends to clash her fashion choices. I prefer Jill Biden’s sense better.

  11. EmilyHaHa April 23, 2009 4:08 pm

@Kate re:Givhan I think you’re totally right about the Post’s staff being a mess. I mean, newspapers everywhere are dropping like flies. But is this the time to pander to tabloid-like journalism? Especially from someone on your staff with a Pulitzer?

@Jenna What? Are you calling my shoes ugly? Haha. No, but your point is well taken. Why isn’t Givhan giving people HERE IN DC makeovers? Let the Scots figure their own style out!

  12. EmilyHaHa April 23, 2009 8:20 pm

Yikes! The ladies aren’t really bringing it, are they, Rachel? And to think that they guys managed 46 comments! Too bad, so sad. Maybe we don’t deserve the freebie, eh? Hmm… (heh-heh)

  13. Closet Coach April 23, 2009 8:34 pm

I apologize for not having anything particularly savvy to say at the moment, but Belabumbum is a brilliant name for a lingerie line.

Oh, and I agree with those who pointed out that Robin Givhan has a Pulitzer for her fashion writing, fer cryin’ out loud; why is she writing silly columns about makeovers for YouTube stars? Is that really all the copy she’s churning out these days?

  14. EmilyHaHa April 23, 2009 8:42 pm

@ClosetCoach ‘Nuff said! “Churning” being the operative word…

  15. N April 23, 2009 9:10 pm

I love this line because the models actually have nipples (Victoria’s Secret, take note: airbrushed nipples look strange).

Regarding DC style, DC is often compared to NYC for it”s lack of style. However, I don’t think women in NYC always look great. I see women in NYC wearing a trend just because it’s trendy and not considering if the trend works for them of it the trend is just ugly (just say no to the resurrection of hammer pants). The point is there are well-dressed people and not-so-well-dressed people anywhere you go.

As for Michelle Obama, I love her unique style. I think one thing that truly makes a woman stand out is individuality, and she certainly has that.

  16. sch April 23, 2009 9:18 pm

I must say that I loved Michelle Obama’s looks on the recent Europe trip. She sticks to silhouettes and colors that look great on her, and she knows when to push the envelope just enough to take it to a new level, or how to adapt her standard looks and pieces to perfectly suit the occasion.

Honestly, can’t think of anything I’d love to see her in more than the brightly hued sheath dresses that she dons with regularity. She’s a woman who knows what works for her, color and line-wise, and that’s what impresses me most about her style.

  17. EmilyHaHa April 23, 2009 9:33 pm

@N You mean there’s something wrong with this? Say it ain’t so! Epic. Fail.

  18. rachel April 24, 2009 12:11 am

I think this one’s gonna go to EmilyHaHa. Congrats on the new blog – we’ll be reading and cheering you on!

Though I have to say, I like Robin. I think she’s a great writer and I generally really like what she has to say. At least she’s not boring! As Donatella Versace once said, “if you’re going to be boring, stay at home.”

  19. EmilyHaHa April 24, 2009 8:29 am

Sweet! Thanks, Rachel. It’s nice to be a private blogging citizen for the first time. How do I go about retrieving this delightful pretty underthing?

  20. Jenna April 24, 2009 8:47 am

@EmilyHaHa – I’m sure YOUR shoes are lovely!

I love the idea of Givhan giving makeovers to DCites. She could start with the summer interns who wear their clubbing clothes to work.

And for the record, I really like Givhan’s columns. She writes about fashion in a way that I find very approachable – she’s much less esoteric than, say, Cathy Horyn.

  21. Rachel April 24, 2009 9:56 am

    EmilyHaHa,
I’ll email you for your address and end it right ovah.

Jenna, your Georgetown Peepcake display = ADORable. I’ll be reading!

  22. EmilyHaHa April 24, 2009 11:46 am

@Jenna Oh thank you, my dear. And YES! Let’s get Robin on makeovers in D.C. immediately! I was on Capitol Hill for Earth Day and you’re right: there’s WAY too much skin being shown.

Also, the comments on Cathy Horyn’s “On The Runway” blog over at the NY Times are nothing short of pathetically hilarious. Get a life people! Haha…

Personally, I enjoyed most of Michelle Obama’s outfits that she wore in Europe…except for that blue argyle cardigan and the black coat with the fuschia blossoms. I feel like too much of an overwhelming pattern like huge fuschia blossoms can be distracting from Michelle’s representation of the White House, and makes her seem a little too young.
