Freebie Friday: Facial From The Still Point

Friday, April 24, 2009

door

Do I even have to explain? It’s a FREE FACIAL from one of the top spas in the area, The Still Point. Need I say more? Well, I think I will, because I treated myself to one the other week, right before I headed out of town for the weekend, and it was so incredibly relaxing and restorative. Sara Damelio uses only 100% organic skincare products like Sensatia, The Body Deli, Kimberly Sayer and Skincando, her own line. They also use organic seasonal produce from the Takoma Park Farmers Market like Blue Ridge Dairy Yogurt and Patterson Farms honey, as well as herbs from their own garden. Sara’s approach is to feed the skin the same way you’d feed yourself (if you didn’t like vodka so much).

Whoever scores this one is one lucky, lucky reader! To win, tell me about your style. Describe your favorite outfit, current style obsessions, trademark pieces. Tell us what looks you’re interested in trying out.

So for instance, here’s mine: “On a daily basis, my style revolves around structured black and white pieces (well, mostly black. I’m a spiller). I love an almost nineties-minimalist look, and I really like boyish pieces. I’m on the hunt for a spoon ring – my high-school boyfriend gave me one and I’d love to replace it. I recently got a pair of slouchy boyfriend jeans that I’m determined to make part of my signature look for the spring and summer.

Happy entering, and happy Friday! Also, I still have stuff, so I think tis contest will extend into at least tomorrow.

Xo
Rachel

Dang it! I should have held off for a day :)

My style is a cross between the “not matching match” and simple basics. Nothing makes me more happy than a pack of hanes men’s v-neck white tees, which in the winter I constantly paired with skinny jeans, old beat-in jumper boots, a fitted cardigan and a huge vintage necklace. most of my jewelry was my grandmothers and i love big, random statement pieces, like a gold next with a white egg in it (ring) or a huge medallion that is my astrological sign.

The best style finds are those you would least expect. I don’t do ornate clothing, but always throw on some catchy jewelry/. And if a shirt doesn’t fit, cut it up and sew it back together so it does. My one hang-up.. pants that are well-tailored. It’s ok to buy pants on sale for $20 at Banana Republic, but just go to the tailor and get them taken in so they look perfect… it totally makes all the difference.

Right now I am obsessed with sandals for summer… something structured, but still very sexy. And a low heel so I can walk in the city!

I thought I had style…then I started reading the ‘Style’ blogs. I realized my style is more kin to road kill than runway?! Just spent $100+ on line this morning trying to right the crimes of fashion I commit on a daily basis!?

Shift dresses! I recently lost 30lbs, and dropped 4 dress sizes in the past 6 months. it became apparent very quickly that i couldn’t keep up with buying a new set of pants every 2 months and found that dresses are more forgiving (and easier to alter). Now I’m addicted to how simple it is to make these dresses look completely different by switching out accessories, shoes or jackets.

I think my style is very minimalist. I wear a lot of basics, but I like to always add a necklace or cute purse, or a belt to add a little feminine touch. I like pieces that are classic and that will last for years, but each season I buy some trendy items to spice up my look. I do not like to do matchy-match outfits. I remember Rachel Zoe saying “that it doesn’t have to match, it just has to make sense” and I think that pretty much describes my style. I also love going to thrift/consigment stores to find unique pieces to add to my closet. I mix pieces from Target with Citizens of Humanity jeans or with a Marc Jacobs dress.
I do not have a lot of clothes because I like to be selective on what I buy. I will try on a lot of clothes, I try to find things that fit my body and I really do not like to take clothing to the tailor (unless I need pants taken in). I learned to sew when I was younger so I know how much work something can take if you want to make the clothes fit your body, it’s expensive and doesn’t always work. So I usually go for what fits and looks good on me without trying too hard.
My favorite piece of clothing is my closet is a classic Catherine Malandrino black dress and a pair of skinny jeans that I got at JCrew.
I am very obssesed with flowers right now and as well as big statement necklaces.

I wear a lot of cardigans. In the summer, I rarely wear pants – it’s all dresses and skirts for me. I’m getting really into vintage fashion, though my love for Target won’t ever die. I’m intrigued by the idea of the romper – stupid or cute? Who can say? Love the blog and the giveaway, btw.

I would consider myself to have a classic comfy look with a hint of current trends. Current trend I’m digging at this moment: Jumpsuit Shorts. Going to test out my first one (since grade school) this weekend and hope I won’t get frustrated with the outfit when I have to go to the restroom!

I had to comment on this because Rachel was forced to listen to me lament my lack of “a style” in middle school. I felt very strongly that all of my friends had these striking looks and that mine was just a mishmash of nothingness.
Now I’m perfectly comfortable with my style of dress even though I can’t describe it. Here’s me trying to:
I have a NEED to layer. I will layer clothes even if it’s 90 degrees outside. I like understated clothes in overstated colors. I’m not a pattern person because I feel it’s easy for a pattern to look cheap and forced if it’s in the wrong color(or wrong light!) or if it’s paired with the wrong thing.
This is going to sound really insanely trite but the thing that makes or breaks an outfit for me is my manner of thinking about how I look in it. Confidence is key, even if you think what you’re wearing is risky in that it’s different and maybe even kooky (“Ann you’re so Kooky”) If you like it then it looks good. Plain and simple. Why should anyone else’s opinion be worth more than yours? I mean seriously, the entire concept of FASHION is about what we like seeing and what we don’t. It’s all about opinions and interpretations and everyone’s is worth the same (read: not much!).

Ugh…I’ve made myself the Mr. Rogers of your blog Rachel. Sorry

My style is preppy-exotic. Having gone to boarding school i never really got out of the pants, cotton tee, blazer, nice leather belt (preferably a men’s belt), capri sandals when the weather is nice. My favorite outfit (which I am coincidentally wearing today) is a pair of trouser jeans with a hint of strech, a cotton tank with a Jcrew boy blazer and gladiator sandals with a chunky necklace and an aqua colored pashmina.
I guess I am a bit bohemian with my dresses and boots combo with cardigans and blazers…
I love bold accessories. I accessorize with a lot of African jewelry and pretty scarves picked up at markets around the world.

As a college student it can be hard to have a style, especially for early morning classes. That being said, I’m all about the classic jean, plain t-shirt and sandal/boot combo. Like you Rachel, I’m a spiller so I need to buy sturdy clothes that’ll survive the marinara/mustard/food attack of the day. I do like to mix it up with funky jewelry and accessories though. For me, it’s a way to add a shot of color or change into an outfit without too much cost. At the same time, the majority of my accessories have a story attached to them, so wearing them reminds me of that day/trip/event.

Believe it or not, you’ve actually caught a glimpse of my style because you posted a picture of me on Project Beltway in October 2007 (http://www.projectbeltway.com/2007/10/seventies-vintage-score-connecticut-avenue/)!

I was in high school when I started wearing a lot of my mom’s old vintage t-shirts from the late 70′s and early 80′s, in addition to old pieces of her jewelry that she didn’t wear anymore. That led to my appreciation for old clothes, and I gradually started acquiring my own pieces from stores in Maryland, DC and New York (where I went to college). I think that the most appealing thing about wearing vintage clothing is the fact that every piece has a unique story that gets a new plot twist every time somebody else wears it. Really intricate, well-made clothes can last forever and really make a great conversation piece.

I’m very lucky to have my mom as a great fashion influence, as she’s always encouraged me to “think outside the box” with clothes. She’s also helped me understand the power of the color black: it really is a woman’s best friend! Wearing a black dress can be the most simple yet effective look for any woman, no matter her age, no matter the season.

My final comment on my own personal style is also a bit of an admission: about 85% of the clothes I own were bought on sale. For some reason, the “thrill of the hunt” just gives me a major rush! Knowing that some work was involved in finding that perfect deal is strangely invigorating and I love the whole experience! All in all, fashion is truly, truly fun and full of possibilities for aesthetic magic to happen! :)

I LOVE these comments! I love us talking about our style!

I was totally unclear about when this contest will end and when others will begin (via grammatical errors brought on by lack of caffeine and rushing out the door post-post). So, this contest will end tomorrow, Saturday the 25, at noon. The final contest will start around the same time (hint: clothes!) and will end on Sunday night around midnight.

Also – Ann’s comment+this giveaway makes me think Mr. Rogers should totally do a cardigan auction for some kind of charity. How awesome would that be?

    Love!
    Rach

Deanna, I remember taking that photo! I loved your comments about clothes taking on stories, and I totally hear you on the thrill of the hunt aspect when it comes to shopping/clothes. I sometimes feel that I like the *process* of finding the perfect dress or purse more than actually owning or wearing said items. So congrats, you’re the winner.

Thanks everyone for entering, these comments were totally fun to read. Let’s do this more often!
