It’s getting hot out there…time to find some shelter!
A quick & dirty listing of some fashionable goings-on around town….
A friend of mine told me that Relish is having a pretty big sale starting today – up to 50% off on, I assume, summer stuff. Just called over there to confirm but there was no answer. Perhaps that means it’s the feeding frenzy she figured it would be?!
Want an excuse to show off a new summer outfit and eat at Cityzen, The Source By Wolfgang Puck, Hook, and PS7’s all at the same time? You might snag a ticket to Washingtonian’s Best Of Party on July 8. Tickets are normally $95, but if you enter the discount code FRIENDBESTOF you get $20 off. What you get: a donation to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society…and well, a food-and-drinkfest the size of The Building Museum. Literally.
The local business network Local First DC has declared July “Celebrate Your Independents Month” (catchy eh?) and are celebrating with July 3’s Fashion Fuse. The event will highlight local design, art and and music from 8-11. Tickets are $30; expect a fashion show and plenty of food. Click here for more info.
Remember when PB interviewed Daniel from We One You Two? And how I thought the name of the store was really weird and kind of um, not good? Well, apparently I wasn’t the only one. So let’s all help them come up with a name, shall we? That’s right, a contest. Oh yeah…and there’s an $800 prize package in it for the winner. It runs through June 30.
Diva in Old Town just got in two like-new Chanel bags (black quilted leather; chain handle). One retails for $2650 but will be $1998, or $1498.50 with their Saturday-only storewide 25% off discount. The other bag is bigger, with lambskin leather and will be $1573.50 with the discount. Pocket change, right?! Email me if you want pics.
The City Paper’s Crafty Bastards Festival is a celebration of all things indie (I’ve picked up great gifts for grownup & real kids) is staging in Silver Spring tomorrow. So if you’re out there, take a look, and if you’re crafty and in the District, you can apply for a booth at DC’s Festival September 28 at the usual spot in Adams Morgan.

I’m having one of those days where nothing seems to be working technologically. Bear with me – hopefully I’ll be back posting tomorrow…

I’m in the current issue (June) of DC Magazine romping around in a romper!
This first image is the one they used for the magazine, and the other is one just for you to see. What I’m wearing: silk Alexander Wang (pant, pant) romper, Alexander Wang razor-cut top, Julie Wolfe necklace, Jean-Michel Cazabat shoes, a Malababa clutch (it has big silver studs that you can’t see unfortunately) and some cool, very architectural Fallon bracelets.
I can’t say enough about how much fun I had doing this shoot, especially styling the outfit and coming up with poses for the actual shoot. The attention and pampering didn’t hurt either: for once in what will probably be my entire life, I got to walk into Barneys Coop and pick out whatever I wanted (no, not to keep!), and I got my hair (Jacob) and makeup (Kari) done over at Erwin Gomez. Cheers to Jamie for shooting.
As we all know, rompers (or “combishorts” as a spread in French Glamour calls them) all the craze right now in fashion circles. But more than once, I found myself explaining them thus: “you know, like, shorts and a top attached…kind of like babies wear…?” Thanks to Cory and everyone over at the magazine for including me…you guys romp! er, rock!

What do you all think of the long “maxi” dresses that are pretty popular right now for summer? I think they can be very pretty, as in the case of Jessica Jordan, who I spotted during my day-trip to Annapolis on Sunday (you can vote on the outfit!). I used to have this dress that wasn’t quite a maxi…it was kind of a hippie day dress that came down to about mid-calf. It wasn’t the most fashionable thing in the world, but it was silk and so, so soft and comfortable. It finally fell apart and I miss it!

I totally fell for Annapolis. We were in such full-on summer mode getting there, talking and listening to music in C’s little convertible, that we missed our exit and made out way into town some kind of back way. I’m so glad we did, because we ended up discovering Absolutely Fabulous (24 Annapolis Street; (410-268-8762), which, as the name implies, is an absolutely fabulous antique and consignment home shop. Lots of cool shabby-chic furniture (how ridiculous is this cabinet below?! I don’t like it really but it was totally cool), light fixtures and assorted curiosities like old cameras and those model display sailboats that I love. I drooled over a set of antique silver tea spoons and C bought a black leather jewelry box for $50. Roomie E took home a pin for $2. How’s that for painless retail therapy?!

The town has a ton of great little boutiques and antique stores, and it seems like everyone who lives there has a porch.
As we drove home (post-Mike’s), we talked about how good it felt to get out of the city, and how refreshingly laid-back and vacation-y Annapolis was. It got us all talking about where we envision ourselves living in the future. I love Washington for its energy, its smart population and growing creative scene, but sometimes I feel at odds with it. I get frustrated by the self-awareness, the relentless competition, the general feeling I get that people don’t know how to relax. I want to be able to walk out on my porch in my underwear to water my plants without thinking about the neighbors! I actually DID that the other day and realized once I was out there. You can take the girl out of Lexington but you can’t take Lexington out of the girl…

I went out to The Courage Cup on Saturday, which I had described to friends as “kind of like Gold Cup except polo.” Clearly I have no idea what happens at these things, because when I was grabbed to go “stomp the divots,” I had no idea what that entailed. Come on, I was there for the outfits! And hats! Turns out I wasn’t the only photographer getting in on the action….
Also: so now I kinda really want a sporran. Recently I’ve been rotating two vintage bags with long straps worn across the body, and these seem like another hands-free alternative, but way more interesting than a fannypack. Doesn’t the black & white one look like something Kate Moss or one of the Olson twins might wear?!
Hat tip to Andrea for having me and to Kenny over at Legal Times for hosting me and for supporting the cause…and a playfully scowling hat tip to Pam for posting the worst.picture.ever of me on her blog.

The roomies and I went to check out Ginger last week – the airy, eco-chic boutique out at the new Maryland shopping district Bethesda Row. I’ve yet to spend a full day scoping all the new area has to offer, but I’ve been hearing so much about Ginger and I’ve been dying to go since I missed the opening a while back. It’s got a great laid-back, almost West-Coast vibe…and tons of feminine clothes from lines like Yoana Baraschi, Linda Loudermilk (who’s led the charge in attractive eco clothes) and the trunk show we oogled that night: Calypso Christiane Celle (love the amazing embellished tunics in bright colors).
We didn’t know exactly where to go when we got out of the parking garage (um…do not ignore the meters) but when we spotted these two well-dressed girls, I knew they’d be able to lead us semi-disoriented Washingtonians to the Bethesda water (turns out they were, of course, also headed to the gathering). I admired their high-waisted-but-slouchy skirts and pretty patterned bags…such happy summer outfits. The skirts were from a favorite New Zealand store that one of the girls buys a lot from (she saves up and buys several things to justify the shipping). But until she WRITES ME to tell me what it is, I’ll pass along a well-priced Cali boutique with some very appealing e-commerce. Enjoy!
UPDATE: I knew she’d write! It’s Supre.com.au. Thanks Charlotte!
