Surrounded: The Sartorialist!
Thursday, March 20, 2008

I managed to piece myself together after the drive back from Lexington and get over to Adamson last night to see the show (again) but more to see Scott Schuman…it was great – actually a smaller crowd (not that it was SMALL necessarily) than I thought. Poor Scott was a bit mobbed though – he kinda had to just stand there with people surrounding him to ask questions and get photos with him – and autographs! He definitely was only going to be in town long enough for the show it sounded, so I doubt we’ll see any DC street shots. It was hot as blazes in there too, so I was impressed by his ability to deal with all of it.
I was pretty much unwilling to push myself into the crowd of people waiting, mainly because I just sorta wanted to casually shoot the breeze with him about the show, why he chose what he did, etc etc, so it was sweet that David (Adamson) grabbed Scott to get him to a cooler area and then introduced us (that’s David making the scrunchy face above…we were joking about something, who knows what now). We talked for a while and I felt heartened that he was sweating as much as I was. He is a cool guy. I wanted to know if it was hard to choose which images made the cut (it wasn’t really….he and Jeremy Danziger – of Danziger Projects – sat down with their favorites and edited it down pretty quickly) and what he does exactly to make his subjects appear so comfortable in front of the camera (he thinks his shorter stature helps).
The crowd turned it out for Scott – lots of nicely fitted jackets/suits and cool pocket squares and quirky eyewear. Then I went with some friends over to Great Wall next door for some seriously good Szechuan food.

Nice recap. Can I go on record and say Scott is absolutely delish in person? –Although I heard so many people commenting on his height (or lack thereof). Such a fashionable and beautiful crowd last night.
It was a fashionable crowd! I don’t know what was more fun: checking out the pictures or checking out what everyone was wearing last night.
I love the first guy’s look in photo #4 (polka dot tie, crazy hair, great glasses, love the vest–was it a three piece or just an odd vest?). I can see he’s a fan, like Scott, of the Thom Browne-esque short pants, though. Not my thing.
Give it up for the short guys!

It WAS so fun to see everyone so decked out – especially great to see a room full of men looking so good.
rdhd – That’s Walker, and if my memory serves, it was a knit vest. The pants were actually not as short as they look in the pic – he was kicking his legs back to show off the socklessness, which I really enjoy.
Did anyone have a favorite photo? Or one that you thought was an odd choice? In case anyone was wondering, there was no set order to the way photos were placed next to one another, so the placement was one way here and another way in NY at Danziger.
Definitely one of the more chic crowds you’ve posted in awhile. DC party shots often tend to look like college semi-formals.
I saw the exhibit in NY at Danziger Project, and I was also surprised/dismayed that the photographs were so small.
i loved the photo of the girl in the red dress leaning up against a dumpster and at the top of the picture on the brick wall behind her was the letters g.r.l, loved it, it just all folded together in my eyes.
and in the picture right under sockless guys picture you can find the back of my head, directly in the middle of that shot all the way in the back. my head is semi-famous now. well, at least the back is anyway.
I see you Jaja! A lovely event all in all. The first shot is tops. The tie bar, pocket sqaure and tie combo, and the snug-fitted jacket pull together the look nicely and the disheveled state of his hair.
