Oscar night red carpet looks! It happened in Hollywood and it happened here, at the Oscar Night party at Posh, benefiting the DC Chapter of the Red Cross. Men looked dapper in tuxedos (plus the one guy in a brown suede jacket -?!) and women wore everything from long sparkly gowns to short cocktail styles, and in general everyone looked really glamorous. I was a little underwhelmed by the looks on the “real” red carpet (Cameron, you couldn’t bother to do your hair?!), though a lot of ladies did look very beautiful. I loved ladies in red Katherine Heigl and Anne Hathaway as well as Hilary Swank, Penelope Cruz and Jennifer Garner). All of it pretty, but relatively safe.

Highlights from DC’s red carpet: having my picture taken with “Angelina Jolie,” the screaming “paparazzi” and “fans” asking for autographs installed along the red carpet entrance, Ebong Eka’s skinny tie look (above), Andrea Rodgers dripping in loaned diamonds from Mervis, the excuse to stare at everyone in attendance and talk fashion shop with friend (and fellow vintage lover) Roll Call columnist Emily Heil, endless sparkling wine and my one-shoulder tiered ruffle vintage dress from The Remix that I found the day before. So of course I was pleased to see so many one-shoulder gowns on the red carpet…

UPDATE: Check out the amazing photos photographer Joseph Allen just posted!

DC’s Own Oscar Night

As I’m sure everyone’s aware, the Oscars are ON for this Sunday. As much as I adore analyzing the red-carpet parade while dressed in stretch pants and curled up on my couch (Charlize, I’ll bring the beer), I adore the idea that there’s an “official Academy-sanctioned” viewing party of the 80th Annual Academy Awards at Posh on Sunday. Expect a red carpet, interviews with “Joan Rivers,” an open bar/hors d’ouerves, a $400-value swag bag for those who spring for the VIP ticket….and of course there’s a charity element to justify it all.

I’m curious to take note of how many guys actually understand what “black tie” means – it pretty much means you wear a tux (it’s not “back tie optional”). Now as you know I’m all for being fashionably creative, but that rarely happens here. Methinks the guys will either wear a tux or try to get away with jackets. In general, I wonder how many folks will truly treat this as if they’re attending the actual Oscars and turn it out.

Click here for tickets and info – the price increases by $20 after today….

hat tip to New York Magazine/Bert Stern for image.

…have kept me from you, dear reader. Apologies to anyone with their panties in a bunch over it.

Speaking of distraction, yesterday I found myself glued to nude and semi-nude images of (once-again-curvy) Lindsay Lohan on the cover of and in the most recent New York magazine…and their awesome Technicolor-bright Spring fashion spread.

Sheer brights are huge for Spring…and a few of these Lilo images have just officially made them even ahem, hotter.

It’s easy to be jaded today, but there’s something so cute and shamelessly girlish about wearing red stockings and shoes on Valentine’s Day. Hers were nice opaque ones from Wolford.

Be Mine,
Rachel

Sidewalk Style: Sparkly Vintage

This is a detail shot of a really cute vintage dress I spotted on a (now) new fashion-friend at a party over the weekend. I used it for my sorta-regular Sidewalk Style column over at strong>Washingtonian.com. Check it out, and pay special attention to the “Rachel Says” part…where I admit that I’m basically an Ebay virgin.

I know it makes no sense, but I have never shopped on Ebay before, so I would love to hear your favorite shops on Ebay, advice, tricks for winning an item, whatever….I think that one of my issues is that I’d be mad if I got something and it didn’t fit. I guess you then just turn it back around and try to sell it yourself on Ebay? It just seems like quite a process. And are there ways to find the really awesome stuff first and make sure you win it?

…and if so, why the hell would you tell me? ( ; Hm.

Warm & Stylish: Connecticut Avenue

I was so impressed yesterday when I walked past this woman, who had managed to look sophisticated and warm all at once with her layers of pretty gray wool. The coat, purchased in Paris from a relatively unknown designer, had gorgeous subtle pleating. She’d thrown her black wrap-scarf around her head to protect her from the hail that had just begun, and even then she looked put-together as opposed to stuck out in the rain.
