Orville,

Ah, if there had been a picture of Arafat next to him I *might* have recognized it.

Still not wearing one. Or a Che t-shirt.

Didn't I just read that Stephen Biko t-shirts are becoming very popular in South Africa now?

rdhd,

It's a kaffiyeh. They are worn to show an enlightened view of socially just international relations visa vis solidarity with the people of Palestine. This guy probably bought his at Urban Outfitters.

The Palestinian style features a black on white, broad, chain-link pattern. This pattern would be Syrian or more generally Levantine if it weren't from Urban outfitters. The small red and white checkered kaffiyeh is traditionally Bedouin (Jordanian--Bani Sakhr or Bani Hashim, or for anyone from the Empty Quarter over to Baghdad) and the almost all-white to all-white kaffiyeh is traditionally worn by Khalijis near the Gulf.

Hipsters sport it around town like a shawl but it's supposed to be worn on top of the head with a thick, black rope called an "'agaal" that holds it down.

Save your money and buy a che t-shirt, or better yet, one of "Those Shirts:"

At first I thought he worked in the food service industry and still had the apron hanging around his neck.

I too hate the scarf trend, though I haven't really seen it in real life. Even the girls with little triangles of scarf around their necks look dumb. We might as well bring back overalls and mullets to complete the look.
