Project Beltway

Paper dolls for grown-ups on the internet!

This one reminds me of the cult UK comic-turned movie Tank Girl, about a character the comic strip writers described as “Mad Max designed by Vivienne Westwood.” The movie starred Lori Petty as Tank Girl and Naomi Watts(!) as Jet Girl, and I’m pretty sure Ice-T played a half-man, half-kangaroo. I only saw parts of the movie and it was a looong time ago, but I do own the soundtrack, which is fantastic. “Big Gun” by Ice-T was an anthem in early high school, when my friends and I would hang out at the local sketchy pool hall and listen to Metallica, Ani DiFranco and Dave Matthews Band in equal measure. That came on my ipod the other day and definitely brought me back…

The movie was kind of a lame attempt at capturing the completely insane, plot-twisted, potty-mouthed punk comic, but it’s worth a Netflix queue add just for the costumes. A weird little plot summary video for your Monday enjoyment…

Bikini Kill…you can’t forget Bikini Kill! They were on the soundtrack and Oh So Excellent! The music and the clothes definately went hand in hand. It was soooo much about female sexuality and throwing it in people’s faces unappologetically…very ‘you’ll want me so bad even while i’m kicking in your teeth’

    Gah! great post!

Hi. You took my picture the other day, I was wearing some tight black jeans and a checkered shirt. I was wondering if you could send me that picture. Thanks.

The music and fashion in this movie are a perfect example of the early ’90′s angry girl rock mentality. Basically it was all about female sexuality and throwing it in people’s faces unappologetically. But not in a slutty way. It was about the translation of sexiness to power. Very ‘you’re going to want me even as i’m kicking in your skull.’
I wouldn’t mind a little of that coming back. It was less about wearing what was percieved as sexy, and more about wearing something that stood out, somthing that made you feel hot and powerful.
It wasn’t the most attractive of attire, but who cared!!!!!??? Girl F*CKING friend YEAH!!!

This is off topic, but can anyone recommend some good thrift stores in DC? Nothing too pricey or costumey, just a place where I can get things like sturdy sweaters and classic wool skirts. The cooler weather has me daydreaming about fall clothes, and I’ll probably start looking around for some in a few weeks. There’s a vendor at Eastern Market (the indoor section) where I got a nice Ann Taylor skirt for $8 last week– are there any permanent stores like that?

Second hand thrift stores in DC:

    Meeps on 18th street
    Second Hand Rose on Wisconsin
    Mercedes Bien on 18th
    Junction on U.
also, the Remix recently moved from alexandria to Cap Hill.

    Curly Haired Girl:

To the excellent list linsdo provided, I’d also suggest Annie Creamcheese on M Street in Georgetown. They have both vintage and consignment items, and the selection is huge, fantastic, and a ton of fun to sort through. The jewelry and accessories there are really fantastic…I picked up a great enamel ring there recently, a great brown lucite necklace that I’ll wear a lot this fall, and some very cool earrings from LA designer Natalia Fabia (http://www.shopnataliafabia.com/earrings.html). They had just gotten some insanely cool oversized cameo bracelets when I was there last.

You should also check out Diva in Old Town (116 South Pitt Street or http://www.divaboutiqueva.com).

    Have fun!

Oh, I forgot to say Secondi in Dupont Circle (http://www.secondi.com/). Since you asked for “not too costumey” or pricey, this might be a good place to try–it’s selection is good for work basics. If you’re out in Bethesda or feel like taking metro, Mustard Seed (http://www.mustardseedshop.com/) might also be a good place to look. Their stuff is priced to sell and you can definitely find some goodies once in a while (I scored Paper Denim & Cloth jeans for $40 there once…back when the brand was really good). An AT skirt for $8 would totally be something you’d find there.
