Project Beltway

Two men in DC uniform (one on his blackberry, of course); an attractive woman beating it outta town.

That photo is at the same time both hilarious and sad. Nice catch.

My favorite is the DC intern version — trade the shoes for flip-flops and bag for backpack. So glam! ; )

    Best. Photo. Ever.

But, seriously, I bet they’re really nice, very accomplished guys who are totally confident in the way they’re dressed (“a messenger bag is gobs more grown-up than a backpack!”), so the all-sorts-of-boring going on here shouldn’t matter, right?

    Riiight.

At least the guy’s on the right aren’t pleated? I know…it still doesn’t make it OK.

    Great blog, btw!

Come on, they’re guys. Most of us don’t think about things the way a “fashiony” woman might. It’s easy to put on a blue shirt and khakis; that’s why I wear suits. Go out on a limb (red socks, brown sued loafers, red glasses) and people deride you for that too. There’s no winning.

Lots of American men outside of NY and LA can be pretty boring style wise. My only complaint is the lack of attention to shoes, this preoccupation with Pilgrim footwear.

Overall though, a lot of men are more interested in career, attaining “stuff”, watching/playing sports, and getting a nice, attractive partner to share life with. Clothing is secondary. If not, there’s the question of “Are you gay?” Even a woman writing in a recent Men’s Vogue commented that she doesn’t like a man to spend more than 7 minutes getting dressed. How much pressure is THAT? It takes me that long to iron a shirt. Thus, we keep it simple.

    Guy,

I feel for you. Some days it does seem like there’s no winning. That’s why you tell ‘em all to go to hell and wear what you want.

Follow the “silver fox’s” lead and wear red glasses. Wear a boutonniere, wear multiple patterns. Someone will complain that *something* isn’t right–ignore them.

Just don’t go for the easy out to avoid the comment.

If there ever was a male style icon in this city it would surely be K Street’s now-infamous Silver Fox.

But truth be told, following his lead – or *trying* to follow his lead, rather – would be a no-win endeavor, for he’s the Frank Dux of DC’s male-fashion Kumite: you know he’s gonna win even before you size up his competition.

    so true, so funny!

I just wanted to second rdhd.

And…wanted to say express that I don’t get the budding “style-icon” status of the silver fox. Granted the glasses are fantastic, but after that…pretty standard british look. He clearly looks pretty sharp, I just think that elevating a basic british sartorial look reeks of Anglophilia.
