Clothes
That
Look
Expensive.
It’s what you look out for when you’re scamming quality knockoffs at Zara or Target or Forever 21 or even scouring vintage stores: details that add some pricey-looking design quality without the price. It’s a good rule of thumb to go by when you’re shopping at H&M or any of those places…Does this look expensive? Does it look like I got it at a cheapo store?
I swear, it helps you find the good stuff.
Anyway, I love the oversized tailored pleats and the heft of the skirt (DKNY from Neiman Marcus), the equally structured jacket (Nanette Lepore)and her Hu’s shoes.
UPDATE: So clearly her clothes are expensive–I’m not saying that her look is CTLE (as a commenter just pointed out, her clothes are CT ARE E), but the great detailing and quality look of her outfit can serve as an inspiration for those on a tighter fashion budget. She clearly wasn’t hitting up the bargain stores, but with all of the great knockoffs and affordable design around, you can look just as good. She just serves as inspiration for the CTLE rule…

How is a woman in a $300-$500 jacket an example of CTLE? She’s wearing CT ARE E head to toe.
Kathryn,
Good point–I think I was a little confusing there. See my update….she’s not an example of CTLE…she’s more an example of what kind of details to look for when scouting for CTLE.
It was kind o confusing.
When shopping for clte think: does this look cheap or does this look expensive? Groundbreaking advice. Here is an example of an expensive outfit, now try to find stuff that looks like this…again, your insight and tips blow me away.
CTLE? Are you rachel ray now?
Sorry, but it looks cheap to me. Especially the close up.
how can everyone neglect the fact that her huge green hobo purse is totally inappropriate for her outfit and makes it look like CTLC—clothes that look cheapo. That grotesque, outdated purse alone looks like she bought it from a street vendor and kills her otherwise-lovely outfit.
I think she looks great, bag and all. The bag makes the self-confident statement “who needs to be color coordinated all the time, and besides, this classic, never out-of-date bag holds all my extra stuff…”
By the way, the lovely young woman is my daughter… what would you expect me to say?
I actually think she looks fantastic and if the bag matched, I would be disappointed. The oversized buttons are great and the bold pattern is hot. My only beef is that the jacket looks a bit out of season – very fall (especially with the earth tones in the dress) but it may just not have not translated well over the Web. Overall, I find her quite fashionable and tasteful.
She looks fantastic! Details in the jacket and the skirt are really lovely. The warm tone colors & the print of the dress are great too
