Capitol File’s Black Book Party

Dina Devalle, Kathryn Minor in Catherine Malandrino & Miss DC Kate Michael in Nicole Miller.

Becca Glover in a vintage ANKA New York top and skirt (or tube top!) from Urban Outfitters, and Pepper Watkins in a bespoke suit. She’d had a funny experience crafting her outfit for last night’s party: she’d hurried through a few spots in Georgetown (including sis Juleanna’s place) looking for an appropriate bottom to wear and ended up at Urban Outfitters. With little track shorts on as a temporary sunstitute, she tried this scrap of black loveliness on over them, flew up to the register to plop down her $5.96 (well, for 5 inches of fabric how much can they expect to charge?) and began taking them off in line, apparently sending a false “cover innocent eyes!!” message to a few nearby mommies.
Pepper’s suit fit him perfectly, which is why I stopped the two in the first place. It turned out that the suit was made espressly for him by a Hong Kong-based tailor named Pierre Mohan. The fabric is from reknown mill Holland & Sherry. Of course this led to a lively discussion about the dearth of decently suited men in a town full of suits. Suits are far more powerful when well-cut, don’t you think?!
A few more images after the jump.

Pepper Watkins’ made-to-measure (MTM) suit from Pierre Mohan appears superb. (To be clear, Mohan does custom MTM suits, not true bespoke. But given Mohan’s reasonable price-point, his MTM suits look, at first blush, to be well worth the modest investment.) Of course, it also doesn’t hurt that Watkins is one of those tall, lean fellow, on whom clothes will tend to drape well.
The cognac lace-up shoes complement his ensemble — white dress shirt with cuff links, polka-dotted blue tie (is there something above his tie, by the way?), and subtly-patterned white handkerchief — quite well.
Watkins gets the elusive solid “A.” Well done.
From the close-up, by the way, it looks as though the suit’s fabric is seersucker? If so, then I think your entry on Capitol Hill’s seersucker day deserves a parenthetical update, explicitly cross-referencing Watkin’s photo and citing the cut of his and Grant Gustafson’s suits as the sort of fits to which chaps should aspire. Also, kudos to Gustafson for finding a smart, off-the-rack suit from Brooks (which traditionally cuts their suits a bit too “sackish”), and finding someone to keenly alter it.
wonderful photographs. enjoyed.
The 1st middle dress is really beautiful, also great blue seersucker(?) suit
