Who Says You Can’t Go Home?
Thursday, May 31, 2007

Sorry guys it took me a while to get back into the swing of things this week. I had such an amazingly wonderful, restful time in Lexington and to be honest it was hard to come back.
I went to the drive-in (yes), swam in the river, ate a bellyful of crawfish and lazed around reading on our screened-in porch and gazing at the mountain views. It really felt like a childhood summer.
The heat was breaking over Southwest Virginia as I drove down 81 on Friday. You could see it settling in: this eerily beautiful bright white haze blanketing the fields. As I got into town I rolled all the windows down and practically got lightheaded breathing in the scent of honeysuckle and earth. I couldn’t get over how good it smelled there. Living in the city, even one as green as Washington…you kind of forget.
So when I got into my car on Monday afternoon for the drive back and I had a flat tire, I wasn’t too bummed that I’d have to stay another day.
My sister Liz & her husband Paul threw this Shake Rag party again this year. They assembled some great musicians known throughout VA. Picture genuine & relaxed people…older, younger, all connected with a laid-back vibe, an appreciation for music and food and the smaller, simpler things in life.
I love the city. But I’m a country girl at heart, and it’s going back home that really reminds me what life is all about. We’ll get back to fashion in DC in a minute, but first, a few more photos out at Shake Rag.

I couldn’t resist taking a lot of pictures of kids. They’re just so much cooler than adults. Love this series:

Peace,

I *still* vacation up in northern Michigan every Summer, and I agree, Rachel’s description brought back all sorts of lakeside nostalgia! Especially the drive-in — it doesn’t get more “home” than a two-movie special in your parents’ car.
I especially liked the pink ruffled swimsuit photo – God knows we all had that peek-a-boo shot at one point in our lives!
Actually Jo I am leaving tomorrow nite for Michigan for the weekend…..Grand Haven area…and also Spring Lake……ahh it brings back so many good memories…….Rachel again
thanks for the memories……
How I love the slip n slide!! Home is always where the heart is, but this country girl is glad you’re back in the city!
Rachel– You’re so right about the point on 81, where you’re finally in the mountains and can roll the windows down and enjoy the fresh air. From one SWVa gal to another, well done!
