Romance in the Air at Vera Wang Show
Thursday, May 24, 2007

Over the weekend I attended a brunch and fashion show for the Spring 2008 Vera Wang Bridal collection. The event was staged at the Ritz Carlton and was spectacular: the multi-course brunch was impressive (foie gras, croquembouche), the company was lively (I sat with my friend Sarah, the VP of Bridal Erica Griffin, Duty Lockhart from The Ritz Carlton & bloggerista Amanda McClements, who sold us all on Hollywood tape), and the flowers alone were probably more expensive than my wedding will ever be.
Someone asked me why I was even going to this since bridal isn’t really seen as “fashion.” But many would argue that Wang, who spent 16 years as an editor at Vogue, brought fashion to the industry and changed it completely. The collection was definitely fashion-forward and modern; the preview sheet noted ancient Greece as the inspiration for the collection, and described it as invoking “nature, spring, and fertility” (snickering immaturely).
I appreciate edginess and modernity in an industry often known for turning out brides who look like doilies. I’m having a hard time picking a favorite, but this one (above & keep reading to see the back view) is among them. I love the silhouette, the languid look of the silk & the genius draping that provides a structure without being stiff. Plus, you could actually eat on your wedding day and it wouldn’t really show!
If anyone’s interested this will all be available come September/October at Saks Jandel…
Check out the entire show below complete with descriptions…what are everyone’s favorites?! What don’t you like?

The back view. I only have a few back views as it was hard to get a good vantage point to do both…I did steal some from Sarah though so thanks S!

Silk jersey one-shoulder toga draped column.

Back detail. Each dress was just as interesting from the back as they were from the front.

Sleeveless short sequin sheath with picot edging & flower.

Silk and wool bell-sleeved bow back jacket with capri pants. The enormous bow in the back…I just…can’t. Not a fan. Yiyeee. But I do appreciate that Wang thought beyond the gown for a few of these, for what the literature called “an alternative vision of weddings.”

Silk taffeta one-shoulder draped mermaid gown with gold laurel back applique.

Strapless silk faille soft ballgown with channel ruched detail.

I love this adorable little jacket! I could do without the fussy bow above the train though–too precious for my taste.

Draped taffeta bodice gown with swagged tulle skirt.

The back on this was great because it’s so unexpected from the front.

Pewter floral embroidered nude tulle gown. This was absolutely gorgeous…great for a glamorous bride.

Washed crepe back satin and chiffon column dress.

Silk chiffon pleated tiered gown with bronze ribon trim and antique bow brooch.

Silk faille front draped gown with bronze ribbon belt and watteau train.

Silk taffeta strapless A-line gown with bronze wrap belt.

Tissue organza and french tulle smocked A-line gown with ruched organza detail.

Back detail.

Washed silk crepe back satin strapless bias gown with draped bodice and antique bow brooch.

Washed silk habutai front pleated gown with ruched neckline. This is the kind of dress you’d have to be tall & lithe to pull off, or else you’d end up looking like a house.

Silk and wool short dress with attached short train.

Washed silk organza tip-of-the-shoulder A-line gown with back flounces and jeweled laurel.

Short smocked tulle dress with floral hem and tulle gathered neck jacket.

Gathered one-shoulder floral brocade gown with asymmetrical hip smocking. I wasn’t a fan of this one at all. If it doesn’t look good on a model, who will it look good on?! It looks like she overslept, draped her bedsheet over herself and darted off to the chapel.

Strapless smocked beach dress.

Metallic duchesse structured mermaid gown with arched and tiered skirt.

Strapless silk tissue organza tiered mermaid gown with arched skirt.

THE END!

The first dress and the “toga” style dress are stunning. Its Vera, so they are all going to be amazing but I get cheezed out by weddings so the fresh spin on the first two are much appreciated- gorgeous and glamorous!
I love the dress with the crumb-catcher and the “Washed silk crepe back satin strapless bias gown with draped bodice and antique bow brooch.”
