The first thing I noticed about her was the elegant way she seemed to float down the street. She emailed later to say that she’d been on her way to Vida where she did “yoga for three hours.” Must be NICE to work from home!

Her ballet-inspired yoga top was pretty and the bag (Hobo International) was cool, but the sandals were really great. They were Ferragamo jellies with coral accents and a playful fish motif. I love shoes that look really great but are completely comfortable and effortless.

For a slightly different look within the “jellies’ category, check out the Melissa shoes at Unsung Designers. Apparently they have a “tutti frutti” smell instead of a yucky plastic smell.

Seriously, I love the fact that Alishia & Grace smell the footwear they order. I love that.

Think…Warm…Thoughts…

OK, I’m seriously getting depressed from this weather. Where did Spring go?! I could post people wearing depressing winter clothing, but I REFUSE and so today I’m posting pictures I took the other week, of shiny happy springtime Washingtonians.

This girl’s look made me really ready for warm weather. She has that beachy, just-scrubbed, J.Crew-model thing goin’ on (sometimes I feel like the models in their catalogue make the clothes look way more adorable than they are…like, can I buy her thighs?!). Hers is the body type is kinda what you need to have to rock the kind of cool longer shorts she’s wearing.

A Proper Suit on Connecticut Avenue

I chased this guy down the street so I could get this picture–finally, a great suit on the streets of Washington! For a city full of men in suits, it’s still pretty rare that you see one that just looks really great. This one was actually a secondhand find in London, but it fit him perfectly. What looks great are the double-vents in the jacket, the narrow fit through the ribcage and a more narrow cut-and no cuff!-on the pant legs.

What are everyone’s favorite local places for men’s suits and tailoring?

I liked these girls for their bold patterns and colors, and you could tell that they shared a certain style.
Turns out they were from California, in town with a group of other high-school kids for Close Up, a nonpartisan education program that teaches young kids about politics…known outside of Washington as “the democratic process.”

Project Beltway Interviews: Margaret Lilly of Lilly’s Closet

Local stylist/closet-editing guru Margaret Lilly runs the personal styling consultancy Lilly’s Closet. As much as I want her to look at my jumbled closet, I hope she never does. So in the hopes that, maybe after a few drinks, I could face mine on my own, I asked her for a few tips.

While I tend to disagree with the suggestion of square-toed shoes for guys, making a list of essentials and “holes” in your wardrobe is definitely a good idea. More after the jump.

What can someone do to edit their own closet?
Well, here are some basic steps:
1) Have a sister or brutally honest friend there for a second opinion.
2) Go thru each item in your closet, trying everything on.
3) Get rid of it if: *You haven’t worn it in up to two months
*It’s showing a little too much wear and tear: holes, pilling, stains, etc.
*It doesn’t fit properly..(unless it can be salvaged by a tailor)
*You don’t feel great in it!

Keep it if: *It flatters your figure, you feel great in it and it’s in great condition.

4) Go back and organize what you held on to by category, from smallest items to biggest. (left to right) I find that I can find things easier when the tanks and tees are hung in front of the blazers, in front of the trousers; that way the little things aren’t getting lost amongst the bigger things.

Republicans in Recess

Not being a Hill-person myself, I had a blast listening to certain Republican staffer give me the lowdown on “recess attire” recently, and how it breaks down between party lines. Though not a staffer, Politico Senior Political writer Jonathan Martin (with Linda Roth publicist Carrie Foster) apparently fit the bill. The staffer writes:

Republican male staff almost all embrace the basics of preppy dressing (much more popular and widespread than what you might call “high preppy” – which is where you see critters embroidered on pants and multiple collars and such) … So for recess they will almost all wear khakis, a blue or blue-patterned button-down shirt (very likely either Brooks Brothers or Polo), and brown or burgundy loafers or brown lace-ups. If they have a meeting, they’ll add a navy blazer …. The result is uniform, but largely tasteful and professional. Democrats often reject preppy style, but don’t really have anything to replace it with, so you’ll see guys in dark-washed jeans, square-toed black shoes, and untucked stripety shirts, as if they expect to go clubbing in the Longworth Cafeteria at 9 AM.
