It’s a little hard to see unfortunately, but she was wearing this really cool old-school-looking church hat that really stood out. I love the idea of hats like this. Let’s bring this back!

Everyone, from the pups to the dudes, looked well-groomed and well-dressed at The Washington Humane Society’s Fashion for Paws fundraiser at the French Embassy on Saturday night. The event featured forty of Washington’s “most celebrated and well-known personalities”–and a whole lotta cute dogs–in a fashion show to benefit the Humane Society’s Good Home Guarantee, a five-year plan that promises to find a home for every adoptable dog and cat that enters the shelter by 2010. The title of “Model Washingtonian of the Year,” was awarded to one male (Justin Magazine) and one female (Jennifer Cheadle) for raising the most moolah.
Participants included MTV’s Paul Wharton, EarthEcho Co-Founder (& grandson of Jacques) Phillipe Cousteau, restaurateurs Ellen & Todd Gray, and yes!–Project Runway’s Wendy Pepper.
Even though I heard that there were a few “model” accidents backstage, the show was fun, loud, and full of energy–no doubt aided by the free-flowing Moet and thumping music…which, err, could have been a little less loud & clubby after the show (Smack That blaring at full volume in the beverage tent). For women–both on and offstage–dresses were de rigeur, while the men stuck to suits and silk ties and pocket squares. The models presented everything from swimwear to bridal from sponsors including Sherman Pickey, Wink, Hermes, Ralph Lauren, and Saks Fifth Avenue.
A lot more…. Read more

NY-based rapper Thelonious Kapps was at Howard with a youth education tour group called APEX. He had this great 80s-hip-hop look going on, a lot like the Retro Kids.

Lots goin’ on.

Today through April 17th, swing by vintage boutique Annie Creamcheese (3279 M Street in Georgetown) for their buy one, get the second 1/2 off sale. They’re open til 8:00 PM. While you’re there, you might as well head over to Cusp for a free manicure and makeup application. Then head over to the opening night of Artomatic, definitely worth the trip across the bridge.
Check in on Monday, when I plan on posting pictures from this Saturday’s sold out Fashion for Paws event. And don’t forget to get your paws on some cool new bling this Saturday and Sunday.
I hope to see you all at The Mandarin Oriental on Monday for Sweet Charity, an event that combines food and fashion to benefit struggling DC schools. Expect bountiful tasting stations from more than 40 area chefs, a chocolate fashion show (you don’t want to miss this), chefs including Duff Goldman (Charm City Cakes), & our very own Warren Brown, and cameras from The Food Network.

And a little further down the road…
Saturday, April 21 will be a busy day in Washington: Lauren Bailey will showcase her Spring collection of bags at Space, Washington’s journo-wonk set will head out to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and one or more afterparties, and those looking to drink, dance, and score some indie finds will head over to Styleistics.

Her jeans and the shoes with them are such a unique look, and the jaunty scarf is cute too. Does anyone else like, STARE at the gorgeous meat at Whole Foods and never buy it!?

If you haven’t already, read Robin Givhan’s piece on the scarves Speaker Nancy Pelosi brought to wear on her Middle East Tour. Givhan is such a great style writer (especially for Washington) because she goes beyond the “what’s in, what’s out” junk and talks about style within a larger societal framework. The article talks about how dress can be used as a subtle but powerful tool to convey messages. Pelosi’s was a message of respect in this instance, but Givhan is correct to point out the more subtle results: her maintenance of her own public identity and an assertion of authority when away from home turf. The article’s perspective is interesting in terms of politics, because it seems that Pelosi has brought a certain grace for this sort of diplomacy.
The last sentence of the article underscores a big reason I wanted to do this blog: “…sometimes it not only matters who you are, but also what you wear.” As we all know, Washington is a city where the first thing people want to know is what you do. Who you are and what you do is of utmost importance here. The city is just as well-known for this type of shameless networking as it’s known for its disinterest in fashion. In the article, it’s almost as if Givhan, by equating power with style, is giving Washington an excuse to begin to treat topics such as fashion as worthy.
Washington’s a pretty cerebral town, so it makes sense to present style as a way to leverage power. Washington is unique in the sense that “stylishness” here has been trumped by the virtues of “appropriateness.” Beyond that, no one wants to come off as insipid for caring about fashion. In a very anthropological sense then, there’s something kind of interesting about how unfashiony DC is, even as it grows more and more cosmopolitan in other ways. So is Washington doomed to sartorial failure? Do politics shape what people wear here? If so, will this culture of appropriateness ever change? Can DC ever be fashionable?
