Eastern Market: A Tribute.

Project Beltway

In case you all haven’t yet heard the sad news, Eastern Market all but burned to the ground last night. Read the story from The Washington Post here and a great piece by Mark Fisher here.

This came as such a shock this morning. I was there yesterday, and I spent a wonderful leisurely afternoon enjoying what everyone loves about the place: sampling and buying delicious fruits and vegetables, digging through bins of vintage linens and daydreaming about the home I might decorate someday, and people watching of course. As a small-town transplant, I’ve always treasured the laid-back, neighborhood vibe at the Market and the family-owned businesses in particular. I can’t get the face of the man who sold me fresh pasta yesterday out of my head.

Keep reading for some more pictures from the last Sunday at Eastern Market. I suspect it won’t be the same for a long time.

I would like to say that when I woke up this morning and heard about the fire at Eastern MArket, I thought that it was a dream, but I am really hurt over this. I have shopped at the market for the longest time. and I have worked with the flower vendor on the inside of the market. ANd also at the MArket Five gallery.I jumped up this moring before work to go and see if it was true or not. and I was shocked at all the damage that was done. But with prayers and community help , we will build the Eastern MArket back up.

Thank you for the lovely pictures of Eastern Market, in the neighborhood where I lived for three very happy years. I hope this wonderful place can be rebuilt yet maintain its sweetness and funky warmth. My heart goes out to the vendors and the lunch stand which fed me so many times.

This is a shame. The Eastern Market was one of the few things I really enjoyed about DC. If anyone knows how we can help rebuild or support the efforts please post any info.

    Hi all–
This site might be a good one to keep an eye on: http://www.saveeasternmarket.org/2007/04/on_this_sad_day_in_capitol_hill_a_welcome.html Read their entry on how specifically to donate to the rebuilding efforts (you need to specify that your $$ is for “Eastern Market: Keep it Going.”. Sounds like things are still pretty uncertain; here’s the update from the Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/05/01/AR2007050100746.html?hpid=topnews
